Fairchild Plugin Vst
New Free Vst Plugins
Hi all,
I have been using the UAD Fairchild collection for a while now, first the legacy and later the new versions. I also have the Teletronix collection , La-3, dbx 160 and other uad compressor plugins too but nearly always settle on a fairchild in the end for insertion on individual tracks in the mix. To my ears they just sound more musical and let the track breathe better than the others. I like them!
I was reading the Fairchild 670 was originally designed as a mastering compressor. In this application I have used it too, again sometimes choosing it over the precision series etc for the same reasons, warmth and musical even though it is not a multi-band type.
I must admit I am a fan of older music , mostly classic blues, Rock & roll and rock from '40's to the 70's. I am not a massive fan of modern music so much. I'm a musician as well as an engineer and being a musician is what got me into production side of things 22 years ago in the first place. Perhaps this is why I prefer the sound of the 'old school' plugins. However, I am not averse to using a plugin version of a more modern unit if it sits better on a track, I let the ears be the judge.
The Manley Vari Mu is on sale at the moment and I have read great things about it. The 670 is also a vari- mu type compressor.
I was just wondering , those of you who have the 670 and the Manley variable mu compressor, do any of you use the 670 for mastering? What are your findings on the two?
From what I have read the manley is more subtle and transparent than the 670 with slower attack times. But, what I am wondering is given that the 670 has a wet dry percentage control and more control than the Manley in essence allowing the user to 'tame' the 670 if you get me............ do I need a manley?
For example the 670 might be good for blues, rock etc whereas the manley may be a better suited to pop, acoustic styles etc.
I know I can go with a trial version and experiment but it is always good to get the views of users who have had and used the plugin for some time to pitch in their views.
This is what I am hoping you will do here.
So, Manley Variable Mu versus the Fairchild 670 for mastering applications, what do you reckon?
Thanks in advance, Eugene.

The Fairchild 670 and 660 are the most coveted vintage compressor/limiters in the world, with good reason. These 20-tube tone titans — which now fetch upwards of $50,000 — impart an unmistakable silky warmth heard on hundreds of hit records from the Beatles and Pink Floyd to countless Motown classics. Never heard the real fairchild, but tried all of the plugin emulations. So cannot comment which is the most true to the source emulation. I like IK T-racks much more than UAD and Waves I tried, it simply behaves more analog-like.
